At first glance, one might think that Jane Austen's writings don't fit particularly well with the occult nature of the Tarot. Jane Austen's books and the Tarot, however, contain an essentially identical message: the vital importance of balance in our daily lives. The Tarot illuminates the need for balance with its very structure. The Major Arcana are devoted to matters of the spirit, while the Minor Arcana address the lesser, more mundane issues of life. The four suits embody all the elements. In the Jane Austen Tarot, these four suits are represented by the Candles, related to passion, energy, and initiative; Cups, which convey aspects of love and emotion; Pens, the rational, analytical, and intellectual side of life; and finally, Pentacles, which embody physical, tangible matters. Each of these evocative cards is based on a character or scene from Austen's writings, but no knowledge of Austen's work, or of the Tarot, is necessary to use these cards.
