Hieronymus Bosch Tarot - A deck of daydreams and nightmares!

There are few artists whose work has sustained the power to shock, amaze and delight audiences for over 500 years, but anyone who views The Garden of Earthly Delights will surely experience all three emotions at once. Although Hieronymus Bosch has a reputation of being a brilliant madman, in his time, he was regarded as a master of art. His unique dreamlike style led him to be crowned the first surrealist, in a period when the artistic consensus was one of realism.

Renowned occultist and bestselling author, Travis McHenry, has painstakingly isolated scenes and characters from Bosch’s works to capture the philosophy of traditional tarot cards. The result is a deck that is beautiful, inspirational and unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.

Hieronymus Bosch Tarot - Sometimes humorous, sometimes haunting, but always captivating.

Mistress of Terror - Control, submission, feminine power

What at first appears to be a monster oppressing a man may in fact be a fierce woman protecting that which is precious to her. This imagery alludes to the concept of marriage. The Mistress of Terror is not necessarily overbearing (nor is she necessarily a wife), but she does represent the incredible power of all women. A woman shouldn’t be afraid of being considered unladylike or masculine if she takes matters into her own hands.

Sin of Greed - Money, business, career, desire for riches

A well-dressed businessman negotiates a deal with one man while accepting a payment from another man behind his back. The man’s ledger of accounts and pen are in the foreground, ready to write down each new entry. This card could easily take the place of the Ace of Coins, although while the Ace of Coins shows being rich this card shows getting rich. If the Sin of Greed is found in a reading next to cards of the suit of Coins, pay close attention to those cards’ potentially negative meanings.

Ace of Berries - Harmony among all living things, happiness, joy

The men, berry and owl all exist together in harmony, each relying on the other for companionship and protection. The berry cannot move on its own, so the men act as its legs. The men cannot see, so the owl acts as their eyes. The owl requires a safe resting place, so the berry acts as its nest. What at first appears to be a bizarre and unworkable combination of arms, legs and vines is actually a perfectly symbiotic triad of living beings.

How to use Hieronymus Bosch Tarot

The guiding philosophy I used to create this deck was: ‘What if Hieronymus Bosch had been commissioned to create the first tarot deck?’ What symbols would he use as suits for the minor arcana? What figures might he consider as trump cards in the major arcana? The tarot began, after all, as a game, and only later was it used as a tool for divination.

As I pulled scenes and characters from Bosch’s artwork, I had the benefit of knowing the hermetic and astrological meanings inherent in the cards. I have rendered these as accurately as possible within the given constraints. Scholars of both art and the occult may question my choices and, hopefully, discover even deeper esoteric meanings than I have revealed.

If the images on the cards carry a special meaning for you, then I encourage you to incorporate that personal meaning into your readings. Ultimately, the impact of divination, like those of art and beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.
