Illustrated by the caricaturist Jean-Jacques Grandville, known for his fantastic, zoomorphic drawings (he combined human beings, animals and plants), Baudelaire compares his work to an apartment where disorder is systematically organized.
This edition is a real encounter between Jean-Jacques Grandville's illustrations and those of traditional cartomancy.
The character of the Parisian Sibyl was inspired by Mlle Lenormand, a famous French fortune-teller of the 19th century. At the time, she was known as the Sibyl of the Faubourg Saint-Germain.

A keyword appears at the bottom of each card. In the center, Grandville's illustrations depict Parisian scenes of the period. The value of the card is shown at top left. In the top right-hand corner, you'll find a number that makes it easy to find the card in the explanatory cards.
